Invisible Giant

One refinery. Fuel for a nation.

For decades, Africa's biggest oil producer imported the fuel it burned.

For decades, Africa's biggest oil producer imported the fuel it burned.

Outside Lagos, the largest single-train refinery in the world now processes 650,000 barrels of crude a day on one integrated line. For the first time in a generation, more than half of Nigeria's petrol is refined at home, and the build is designed to sustain around 135,000 permanent jobs.

When a continent refines what it pumps, the value stays where the oil is.
